Ein malzbetontes Bier mit Noten von Karamell, Toffee und leichter Rösttrockenheit. Die Bittere ist zurückhaltend und dient lediglich zur Balance. Typisch für die schottische Brautradition und stärker als andere Scottish Ales.

Ein malzbetontes Bier mittlerer Stärke mit Noten von Karamell, Toast, Toffee und leichter Fruchtigkeit. Eine dezente Rösttrockenheit gleicht die Restsüße aus, die Bittere bleibt zurückhaltend und verhindert nur, dass das Bier klebrig wirkt.

In der Nase zeigen sich mittlere Malzaromen mit Karamell- und Toffeenuancen, dazu leichte toastige oder süßliche Anklänge und etwas Frucht. Im Geschmack dominieren malzig-brotige Töne mit Karamell und Toffee, abgerundet durch eine sanfte Röstnote im Finish. Körper und Mundgefühl sind mittel, oft cremig.

Entstanden ist der Stil nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, während die Bezeichnung „Shilling Ale“ schon vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg für milde Biere verwendet wurde. Typische Zutaten sind Pale Ale Malz, Farbmalze sowie verschiedene Zusätze wie Zucker oder Weizen, dazu sauberes Wasser und neutrale Hefe.

Im Vergleich ist Scottish Export kräftiger als andere Scottish Ales, ähnelt in der Stärke einem Best oder Strong Bitter, hat aber ein deutlich anderes Geschmacksprofil.

15–30 IBU, 24–40 EBC, 3,9–6,0 % Vol.
